NHS Weight Loss Injections – VSCE Update

Due to the media coverage of the weight loss injections and to support with any enquiries from services users and residents seeking information regarding the weight loss drug Tirzepatide (Mounjaro):

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is not currently available from the NHS in Greater Manchester, including GP practices, hospitals, or specialist weight management services. Some people in Salford are accessing it privately.

In Salford, the NHS service is being developed, with plans for eligible patients to have access starting in late autumn 2025.

Access to the weight loss drug will be introduced gradually, and for year 1 patients with the following will be eligible:  

  1. Adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more, and
  2. Four or more weight-related of the specific health conditions listed below
  3. Type 2 diabetes
  4. High blood pressure (hypertension)
  5. Cardiovascular disease caused by narrowed or blocked arteries (including heart attacks, strokes, peripheral vascular disease or heart failure)
  6. A diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea requiring treatment from a Sleep Clinic
  7. Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)

Please advise patients not to contact their practice or make an appointment with their GP to discuss medication for weight loss. If they are eligible their GP will contact them.

Other Salford weight management support offers:

  • Healthier You (National Diabetes Prevention Programme), a 9 month programme for individuals identified as being at high risk of type 2 diabetes.
